The river mouth is wide As in the town That spreads on either side Along the muddy banks Between the bridge and the cranes The river is tough ... and reckless too The river learns to stand The river keeps her secrets And the river makes for it The barges and the factories The river never tells He begins his education Few in steps and then in strides He learns to thrive With some of the people And joins the strongest sides And falls in with bad company Maybe that's her only kind He obtains his needs by bullying And his reputation grows Wider than the river mouth And deeper than Wider than the yesterday page falling away As far as the lightships The river is wide As an endless corridor Wide as the years The underworld is wider open As the river gets wider And an entertaining sound So are offices and cafes And the cars left in the park The boy is tough and reckless too But larger are the mark They taught him all his rules And left him living in the ruin Just another kind of bastard Just another kind of beast With an ache in the gutter With an ache in the heart Waiting for the dawn Waiting for his girl Or a friend to help him home Next time, he'll be more prepared So bleak and starting sage A sort of smile, a stinging tear And the wide boy moves off stage The river bucket flows forward Sluggish on its course Towards the sea To the bright and shining stream The gentle bubbles from its mouth As the baby somehow learned And changed without an effort The wide boy saw the chances And all that chance might bring Had learned the opportunities His escape, the next best thing A young man in an office Lying in the rain Who shed no tears of innocence Who confessed all acts of reason Who finally in the gutter Has surrendered to his fate He has closed slowly eyes And waited for a heart The river came
